CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP: WEAVING WITH COLOR & SHAPE

For the first children’s workshop of 2025, children aged between 7 & 12  gathered at the Lusaka Contemporary Art Centre for a workshop facilitated by our artist in residence Francys Catherine Ruiz Moreno assisted by Gloria Hankombo and Miss Chipale.

The workshop ws inspired by Anni Albers, Evans Mbugu and Indigenous communities from south America with an aim to

  • Introduce children to the work of weaving and how multicultural this could be in a fun, accessible way.
  • Teach basic weaving and design skills using simple materials such as paper, c Cardboard, sticks and plants that we find around us.
  • Encourage exploration of color, pattern, and texture.
  • Incorporate natural and recyclable materials and traditions into a creative, tactile experience.

In this workshop the children had the chance to express themselves through colour and pattern play, they coloured and drew on colourful pieces of paper from their imagination  then went into weaving on a simple loom made out of cardboard using basic under-over weaving techniques, exposing the children to different  textures and color to create their pieces.
